Tom's Kitchen

"Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we may diet"

Harry Kurnitz

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to be invited by A for a night of fine food at Tom's Kitchen in Canary Wharf, how could I refuse?

If you don't know it, Tom's Kitchen is a modern British restaurant serving some amazingly good comfort food.   Tom Aikens is the mastermind behind the restaurant, he began cooking at the age of 16 and has been hooked ever since.  After opening a restaurant in Chelsea in 2003, 'Toms Aikens Restaurant', he went on to open his first 'Toms Kitchen' in 2006, a few more followed, and in June of this year he opened a Tom's Kitchen in Canary Wharf, here's how our evening went....

The modern British restaurant includes a restaurant, bar and a deli and is conveniently located in Westferry Circus, a short walk from the tube station.  We arrived for 7.30pm, and greeted by a smiling host, were shown to our table.  We decided to start with cocktails (obviously!), both opting for 'Chelsea Gardens' a refreshingly sweet martini made of Hendricks Gin, cloudy apple juice, Elderflower cordial and fresh cucumber...

Cheers!

We took our time pondering (drooling!) over the menu before choosing our starters, we decided to share, that way we got the best of both worlds!  We went for.....

Chicken Liver & Foie Gras Parfait, brioche, shallot chutney

Hand-Dived Baked Scallops, ginger, butternut squash, sage & pine nut sauce.

Both were divine!  The dishes were very different, yet the flavours in both were delicious.  I actually couldn't have chosen a favourite!

Wine was served, as we were both having fish as our main course we opted for a light and crisp white wine.  We went with the waiters reccomendation - Gavi di Gavi, La Meirana, Piemonte, Italy 2010.

Far too easy to drink....

After both agreeing that the wine was delicious and catching up on the weeks events our main course was served.  We both went for the roast Seabass with piquillo peppers, buttered clams and borlotti beans.

Plus sides...

Cherry tomato and beetroot salad, and a dish of steamed spinach

The seabass was perfectly flaky and the bertolli beans and clam complimented it well.  At first I thought there may be too much sauce, but I was wrong, it added the exact amount of flavour required.

Full to bursting at this point, but we are girls and somehow the female race always manage to find space for dessert (well my friends and I always do!).

The waitress highly recommended the chocolate pudding that I had had my eye on since first browsing the menu and with such a strong recommendation, how could I refuse to try it?!  Annie, who usually wouldn't opt for a chocolate dessert, was even convinced into having it. And so two of the hot chocolate pots with pistachio ice cream, one latte and one cappuccino were ordered!

Both being slightly inquisitive and requiring a chance to stretch our legs, when our waitress offered a tour of the restaurant we both jumped at the chance (literally!)

...and we then took a short walk to the bar where Ruben made us another one of his fantastic 'Chelsea Gardens'! (Yes they really are that good!)

The concentration!

Smiles all round!

One very happy customer!

It really was a very lovely evening, Toms Kitchen serves such tasty food and drinks, has a great bustling atmosphere and the service is spectacular.  I highly recommend popping in if you get chance, whether it be for a quick bite with friends or a three-course, 'blow it all' feast!

Tom has kitchens in Canary Wharf, Somerset House and Chelsea and you can find them here.

They even do a special lunch and dinner set menu if you want to experience the same delicious food without it pinching your pocket!  Very good for a January visit!  Bon appetit!
